Greece EU elections wipe out 3 political parties – Final Results

The European elections in Greece not only pushed conservative New Democracy to win with a margin of 9% it also wiped out three political parties with presence in the Greek Parliament.

With 99.29% of the votes counted, Greek voters send 21 people from six political parties to the European Parliament.

Snapshot from Interior Ministry website at 9:36 a.m. Wednesday- Also in comparison to EU elections in May 2014 – New Democracy – SYRIZA – KINAL/PASOK – KKE – Golden Dawn – Greek Solution – MeRA25.

Compared to May 2014 elections, ND wind 3 more seats in the European Parliament, SYRIZA maintains the same number. Golden Dawn has also the same number of seats although it lost almost half of its voters. It is questionable on whether one of its MEP Yiannis Lagos, will be able to jn the EP due to a travel ban imposed by Greek authorities pending the GD trial.

Big surprise is the one seat for founder of Elliniki Lysi ( Greek Solution) Kyriakos Velopoulos, an ultra right-wing politician who according to his own statements is “right from ND” and fan of Orban and opposes things that are “very much Nazi [sic!]”

At the same time, Greek voters down voted three political parties with presence in the Greek parliament. They “punished’ To Potami, The Centrists’ Union and Independent Greeks (ANEL) of former SYRIZA coalition partner Panos Kammenos, that  sank below 2% and some even below 1%.

Stavros Theodorakis said that he will resign as Potami leader and he will propose that the party does not participate in the parliamentary elections.

Participation at the EU race was at 58.70% although there is suggestion that the ballot catalogues were not updated.

What’s nextThe Interior Ministry justified the unprescended delay in 10

The Interior Ministry justified the unprecedented delay in counting 1005 of the votes blaming the Regional administration.

What’s next?

Following the sweeping victory of ND, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced snap elections after the second round of local and regional elections next Sunday, June 2.

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on Tuesday that the date of the race for the parliament has been set on July 7, 2019.

Tsipras is scheduled to meet the President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlospoulos on June 10 and ask him to declare early elections.

Parliamentary elections have to take place 3 weeks the earliest and 4 weeks the latest after their declaration.

There is not going to be care taker government as the elections are asked by the government itself that has not resigned.

According to media information, Tsipras is going to replace only the Minister of Interior and the government spokesman.

As Greece enters another pre-elections period, ND targets a government that won;t need coalition partners, while SYRIZA hopes to win back its voters or at least lose the elections with a descent margin.
