Greece:- Fires: The Greek Orthodox Church at the disposal of the fire victims. Greeks around the world offering help.

Yesterday, the Archbishop of Athens, Mr. Ieronymos, made available to the state, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and other competent authorities the social and charitable structures of the Archdiocese of Athens, in particular the camps in Avlona, ​​Attica and the Center for Gerontology in Dilesi. covering the housing needs of our fellow human beings affected by the fire in the Attica basin.

At the same time, the Archbishop appeals to all the metropolitans and to all the holy monasteries of the regions of the country that are affected by fires to assist by any means and in any way in the relief of our suffering fellow human beings.

Specifically, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece sent an urgent circular to the metropolises yesterday, requesting direct communication with each district in which each metropolis is located, in order to inform about the number of beds it can allocate for the temporary hosting of the fire. in church sites and institutions (camps, boarding schools, monasteries, etc.).

Also, the Archbishop has already instructed the general director of “Apostolis” Konstantinos Dimtsas to undertake the feeding and coverage of all other immediate needs of our fire-affected fellow human beings (“Apostolis” call center: 213-01.84.400).

A statement from the Archdiocese stressed that “the Archbishop expresses his gratitude to all the men and women of the Fire Brigade and the Police, as well as to all the numerous volunteers who are fighting, with self-denial and self-sacrifice, the last days in front of the fiery flame “.
At the same time, the National Technical University of Athens and the Research University Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (EPISEV) of NTUA announced that they offer a total amount of 40,000 euros as a contribution to support the victims.

The NTUA also made available to the competent authorities rooms in the new student dormitories at the Technical University of Zografou, for temporary accommodation of fire victims.

The local Church, organizations and associations express their support to the victims of the fires by collecting food and medicine

A wave of support is manifested from Magnesia for the fire victims, with organizations and individuals opening a huge embrace, displaying quick reflexes.

“O Estavromenos” is on standby to support the fire victims of Evia. Fr. Theodoros Batakas, president of the Association for the Support of Prisoners of Volos the “Crucified”, with the consent of the members of the Board. and the Metropolitan of Demitriados Mr. Ignatius, sent a relevant letter to the Metropolitan of Chalkis and Northern Sporades Mr. Chrysostomos.

The letter underlines the intention of the local Church to assist the fire victims of Evia, who are being severely tested, with Fr. Theodoros underlining: We have the mood and the ability to send you immediately, by car from our Holy Metropolis, various necessary items – materials, such as: bed linen (sheets, pillowcases, etc.), clothes (children and women), cleaning items, food (or mandatory for their purchase) etc. We are available…”.

Greek orthodox churches world wide are campaigning to help fire victims recently in an interview the Archdiocese of New York made a plea to all church members across the world to help.  The Archdiocese will host its second collection on Sunday at more than 500 churches across the United States to raise funds to help affected people.
