What are the scientists’ suggestions for entertainment, catering, stadiums, schools, hospital visits?

The members of the Committee of Experts propose targeted measures to stop the Omicron variant.

Specifically, based on the announcements of Mr. Plevris, the following measures will enter into force from January 3rd, 2022 until January 16th, with the possibility of extension if required by the epidemiological data:

  • Mandatory use of a high respiratory protection mask (KN95 or FFP2) or alternatively a double mask, surgical or fabric (the recommendation is to choose the high protection mask) both in supermarkets and public transport, as well as the staff of restaurants.

In the area of entertainment and catering, the opening hours are until midnight and entertainment with customers standing is not allowed. Up to six people can sit at the tables and metric distances will apply. Music is still allowed at this stage, however, if it is found that measures are not observed, the music will be stopped.

  • Regarding sports facilities and specifically stadiums, where as the Minister of Health pointed out, non-observance of measures has been observed, restrictions are imposed on the attendance of fans at a rate of 10% with a maximum of 1,000 people. If the measures are not observed, all events will be held behind closed doors.

  • In care units of the elderly and the chronically ill, visitation will be allowed only with a 48-hour PCR test.

In addition, those visiting patients in hospitals should have a negative 48-hour PCR, while the entry of medical visitors to hospitals is limited.

  • In terms of teleworking, it will be applied to both public sector services and private companies up to 50%, while there will be rolling hours, which will be determined based on the capabilities of each service.

  • Regarding schools and the way of operation, the discussion will end next week, however there will be no school trips.

Schools must be closed, says the professor of Pulmonology, Mr. Tzanakis

“We must also take measures regarding schools and the opening of universities. It is so widespread among the student youth that I am afraid that many departments will close “.

This was repeated today (27/12) by the professor of Pulmonology, Nikos Tzanakis, who insisted that “it is better to close a week and extend the school year in June”.

The Omicron mutation is becoming more and more prevalent and cases of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, are causing great concern to scientists.

“The later we take the measures, the worse the wave will be, we will additionally pay attention to the youth and especially the schools”, pointed out Dr. Tzanakis, who a few days ago had predicted the breaking of the infection record.

The Minister of Health pointed out during the announcement of the new measures that the Omicron variant is now in a strong degree within the Greek territory and especially in Attica, which causes concern and was discussed at the meeting of the Committee of Experts. 75% of the cases concern the ages of 20 to 59 years. Only 6% are over the age of 60. He appealed to young people to avoid contact with older relatives or for visitation to be done with great care. He estimated that in the coming days we will see a further increase in cases and expressed the hope that they will not affect the operation of the NHS.
