Greece:- P.M Mitsotakis: Democracy has the power to last and renew itself

Political stability with a strong Rule of Law and development by bridging social differences are just some of the conquests of the Post-colonialism, points out Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his message for the 48th anniversary of the restoration of the Republic
The prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, refers to the acute energy crisis, the pandemic, but also the challenges against our sovereign rights, in his message for the 48th anniversary of the restoration of the Republic.

“Armed with almost five decades of experience, our Republic is today called upon to face new external problems” notes the Prime Minister in his message, while he makes special reference to the energy crisis stressing that “Greece has energy sufficiency and is turning into a liquefied natural gas transport hub in the Balkans and Europe. At the same time, however, it also shields its citizens with targeted measures against price increases. The benefits of economic recovery are thus returned to society. But always with a plan and responsibility, which do not endanger the collective progress”.

“The messages of the fighters against the Dictatorship become beacons for the fighters of modern Democracy. They call us to protect it from lies and demagoguery,” the prime minister also points out.

Here is the Prime Minister’s full message:

“We Greeks are celebrating, today, 48 years of a fruitful democratic journey. From those historic moments on July 24, 1974, when Konstantinos Karamanlis was restoring Democracy to our homeland, our country is going through the longest period of smooth parliamentary life in the two centuries of our national independence. In fact, in a short while, our Constitution will be the longest in the history of the country, with a duration longer than even that of 1864. Another example of the power that the Republic has to last and renew itself.

Political stability with a strong Rule of Law and development by bridging social differences are just some of the achievements of the Post-colonial era. Not at all self-evident for the young government of 1974. Not at all given, as the years of populism and division later showed. And of course, not at all easy in the face of the perennial national challenges we face.

And yet, throughout this time, Greek men and women succeeded in overcoming difficulties, marching on the path of Europe, Peace and Progress. So that we have weathered global storms like the pandemic. But also many simultaneous and complex bets, such as the aggressive challenges surrounding the country’s sovereign rights.

Armed with almost five decades of experience, today our Republic is called upon to face new external problems. Mainly, of course, energy insecurity and the precision caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. To these asymmetric threats, the State constantly unfolds new answers. And while he claims European solutions, he proceeds with national aid.

Greece already has energy sufficiency and is becoming a transport hub for liquefied natural gas in the Balkans and Europe. At the same time, however, it also shields its citizens with targeted measures against price increases. The benefits from the restructuring of the economy thus return to society. Always, however, with a plan and responsibility that do not jeopardize collective progress.

On this day, the messages of the fighters against the Dictatorship become beacons for the fighters of modern Democracy. We are called to protect it from lies and demagoguery. And to deepen it with more rights. To combine freedom with responsibility. The individual attitude with unity. And, above all, the continuity of creativity with the certainty of stability.

We remember those heroes today. We honor them and listen to them. Stronger, united and optimistic, we Greeks move forward!”
