Greece:- Tourism: Air traffic has returned to 14 regional airports, with Zakynthos up 10.5%

Tourism: In 2019, traffic returned to the 14 regional airports in April

How passenger traffic is shaped. At which airports did the number of passengers exceed that of 2019?

Passenger traffic at the 14 regional airports managed by Fraport Greece returned to 2019 levels in April. According to the data of the concessionaire company, the number of passengers transported last month, compared to April 2019 is lower by only 2.3%, having reached 1.4 million people.

This performance confirms the scenario they had formulated in aviation since the beginning of the year. To return, that is, this year of passenger traffic in 2019 when tourism had set a record. Based on the summer programs of the airlines and the hotel reservations, as the tourist season intensifies, the performance gap between 2019 and this year will be bridged, while the passenger traffic is estimated to exceed that of 2019.

However, as market executives explain, despite the apparent return of traffic in 2019, the demand is for these good performances to be recorded on a twelve-month basis, ie not limited to the months of the summer season. This, however, is estimated to happen next year.

The traffic returned

However, the trend tends to consolidate, with some airports showing passenger traffic stronger in 2019 than in 2019. The small airport of Aktio has more than doubled the number of passengers compared to 2019.

In Skiathos, passenger traffic increased by 23.2%, compared to the corresponding month of 2019, with the corresponding percentage amounting to 7.38%, 5.32% and 10.5% in Rhodes, Kos and Zakynthos respectively.

In Chania the passenger traffic is equivalent to that of April 2019.

The largest deviation, compared to 2019, is recorded at a rate of 12% and 23% in Thessaloniki and Kavala respectively.

The first four months

With a reference point in the first four months of 2022, compared to the corresponding period of 2019, passenger traffic at the 14 regional airports corresponds to 81% of 2019. At that time, 3.3 million people were transported, a number that stands at 2.7 million,  the corresponding period of this year.

Compared to 2021 – the year in which the pandemic continued to affect travel significantly – passenger traffic at the 14 regional airports is significantly higher. Last April, 162.4 thousand people were handled from the 14 airports, a number that rose to 1.4 million this year (762%).
