Greece:- University of Thessaloniki “We are looking for the mutated coronvirus strain in sewage systems.

For ten days now, the University of Thessaloniki has been trying to locate the coronavirus mutation in the sewage system – Interview at ethnos.gr

Sewage research to detect the coronavirus strain mutation is ongoing; however the good news is that not a single positive sample of influenza has been recorded so far by the largest Microbiology Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which is also the Reference Laboratory for the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV- 2 in Northern Greece.

At that time, the flu virus was at its peak, with the reference laboratory performing about 1,000 tests throughout the epidemiological period from January to March. Of these, 30% were usually positive for the flu virus. Respectively this year the samples to be examined have not exceeded 100 so far while none has come out positive. At the same time, during the summer months alone, the laboratory examined 4,000 samples of coronavirus per day, while since the beginning of the pandemic, about 170,000 samples have been put under the microscope of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

At such a time we were at the peak of the flu. In Greece it starts on January 10-15 and throughout February and March in previous years we had a lot of positive samples. It was the protagonist in respiratory infections “said to ethnos.gr the associate professor of the University of Thessaloniki and member of the 2nd Laboratory of Microbiology of the university Georgia Gioula added:” But this is what we expected. Influenza is a respiratory virus that is more difficult to transmit than the coronavirus. So it is understood with the protection measures, with the masks but also the fact that many more were vaccinated this year for the flu, we will not see many positive samples “.

Barrage of checks for the new mutant strain from October

Regarding the mutated strain of the coronavirus, the professor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki stressed that the laboratory proceeds retrospectively to check all the samples from October until today. So far the positive cases remain three. “We are constantly carrying out intensive checks and the volume of samples has increased. From the moment the executive is released, it is not necessary that this control should be done only to tourists and to entrance gates. It is done in all our samples regardless of where they predominate. The only sure thing is that we are dealing with a very contagious strain “. According to the professor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the transmission of the virus stops with the same protection measures that apply today. “So we have an executive with great contagion and on the other hand we can deal with it if we follow all the measures.”
