Greek police investigates “racist motive” of attack against Afghan minors

Greek police said that they are investigating a possible racist motive in the violent attack by a group of hooded men against a group of Afghan minors in the town of Konitsa, North-West  Greece, last Sunday.

Five men wearing hoods and armed with clubs attacked nine unaccompanied Afghan minors who are staying at a facility for unaccompanied minors in Konitsa.

The minors aged 14-18 were playing basketball in the open-air court of the facility, when they were attacked.

One of the Afghan children had a broken arm and bruises on the legs, a second child suffered acute distress as they attempted to escape.

The two children were initially transferred to the Konitsa Health Center and then to the Hospital of Ioannina, from where they were discharged the next day.

A police statement Wednesday said the Racist Violence Department is trying to identify the assailants.

The Mayor of Konitsa, Andreas Papaspyrou, condemned the attack saying that the whole local society is angry at the attackers and assured that the local authorities and police will do their best to identify the assailants.
