Greek Post workers on 24h strike, protesting loss of 2,300 jobs

Greek Post workers took to the streets on Wednesday to protest a restructuring plan for Greece’s oldest organization, a plan that foresees the closure of dozens of branches and the loss of more than two thousand jobs.

According to ELTA workers’ union more than 2,300 employees will be fired and 250 branches will be closed across the country with the effect that the postal service will be downgraded.

The restructuring plan for the ELTA “sustainability” follows decisions of Greece’s lenders and the Privatization Fund.

The workers’ union claims that the state-run enterprise would gain liquidity should the state pays its debt to ELTA amounting 250 million euros.

Furthermore, the union says the ELTA should be modernized and join parcel service of the electronic trade.

The Hellenic Post was founded in 1828. The Greek government owns the company at 90%, while a 10% is owned by the Eurobank.

By the way: ELTA prohibits private courier companies to be competitive to ELTA pricing.

PS Slowly but gradually we’ll see one after the other of the state-run enterprises to go over to private investors. these are the fruits of the 3. bailout.
