Greek school students of all education levels joined the global rally ClimateStrike on Friday urging governments to move towards the protection of the planet. The Climate Strike is an initiative of 15-year-old Swedish student Greta Thunberg.
12 o’ clock Friday noon, students gathered at Syntagma square in downtown Athens holding plakats and chanting slogans like “No violence to the Environment.”

Similar events were held also in Thessaloniki, Alexandroupoli, on the island of Crete and other Greek cities.
Climatestrike is an international student movement prompting students globally to express their concern over climate change by abstaining from classes and by participating in peaceful student marches to pressure officials for take a more active and urgent role in protecting the environment.
The movement began in August 2018 when Greta Thunberg, 15, held a sitting protest before the Swedish parliament in Stockholm for three weeks, to condemn the lack of action by the government. On September 8, she decided to abstain from classes every Friday until Swedish authorities adopt a plan preventing environmental destruction. Greta’s action inspired students globally to organise their own actions under the hash tags #FridaysForFuture και #Climatestrike.
Speaking to Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), student Irene, 18, said that “while our planet is on the brink of environmental collapse over which we have been warned for years, we continue to do nothing – that is sad.” The movement, she said, “wants to attract the attention of governments and to activate the rest of the people to do something.”
“We hope that some officials may be moved by this event and they start feeling the need for a conscientious effort so we have a future in this world,” she concluded.
