A sailboat catches fire and sinks in Kefalonia within minutes. The sinking caused marine pollution in the area of Fiskardo…
A fire broke out yesterday (12-09-2022), due to an unknown cause, on the sailing vessel “XENK”, which was anchored in the sea area south of the port of Fiskardo, Kefalonia, with six foreigners on board.
Immediately, a patrol boat of the Coast Guard raced to the scene and with the help of a speedboat they gathered the passengers and took them to the port of Fiskardo. According to the Coast Guard, the burning sailboat was moved to a safe anchoring point, north of the port, for the operation to extinguish the fire by a team from the Fire Service.
Also, a floating anti-pollution barrier was installed around the perimeter of the sailboat, as well as flashing lights for navigational safety reasons.
“HENK” sank shortly afterwards, causing marine pollution, which was contained within the floating barrier and dealt with using decontamination materials.
The Fiskardo Port Station, which conducts the preliminary investigation, initiated the process of imposing administrative sanctions.
