Kephalonia seiged by flames! Tourists evacuated.

Kephalonia unfortunately has succumbed to fires. In efforts to keep people safe they have had to evacuate people from the areas affected.

Around 8a.m this morning, 200 tourists were instructed to evcuate their accommodation in Lourdata. Coaches transferred the visitors to another area and according to sources many touists were reluccant to leave.

According to Ionian Islands Fire Brigade Regional Administrator Andrea Rizzo, “The fire literally passed through the courtyards of residential areas in the Lourdata area of Kephalonia without endangering human lives. The fire burnt an old warehouse that was in the woods and an earthmoving machine. In collaboration with the Police, the Kephalonia fire department evacuated homes and accommodation in the area so that no human life was at risk. “

According to sources, Argostoli Mayor, Mr Theofilos Michalatos, who has been on the fire front since the first moment, made the following statement: “Around 5.15am the fire broke out on two fronts in Vladata. The civil protection of the Municipality of Argostoli reached the point in time, as did the firefighting forces. We contacted the Civil Protection Secretary and the Chief of the Fire Department to dispatch additional airlifts, as aircraft could not make an attempt due to strong winds. We transported about 200 tourists to Lourda beach for greater security. We evacuated the hotels in the area and took them to the beach so they wouldn’t be in danger and we also brought buses to take them outside if needed. Luckily around 8am the wind died down and we had better results and the fire was able to be controlled. “

Fires that started just before 6am, almost simultaneously, in Vlahata and Lourdata are currently under some control. The battle of firefighters, however, will continue for fear of resurgence, and on the ground there will remain ground forces of the Fire Brigade.
