On rare European trip, Bolivia’s President Evo Morales visits Greece

Bolivia’s left-wing President Evo Morales is visiting Greece, in the context of a rare trip to Europe. Talks in Athens are expected to include the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.

Morales came in Athens late Thursday afternoon, travelling from Vienna where he attended a United Nations conference on combating drug trafficking and abuse globally.

In Greece, he is due to meet Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, whose Syriza party has friendly ties with left-wing parties in South America.

“With great pleasure, we welcome the President of Bolivia, E. Morales @evoespueblo. Our countries may be thousands of kilometers away, but our peoples share common values and struggles: For social justice, freedom, independence,” Alexis Tipras tweeted on Thursday evening.

IN a second tweet, the Greek Prime Minister praised Morales writing “Evo Morales makes the struggle for social change, popular and national sovereignty and independence. He has shaped a great social and political coalition, a vast array of radical, progressive forces, social movements, trade unions and indigenous communities.”

In late January, Syriza expressed “full support and solidarity” with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, in contrast with the major European Union members which have expressed support for the country’s opposition leader Juan Guaido, who is seeking to oust Maduro.

Morales has maintained his alliance with Maduro throughout the crisis.

The meeting between Taipras and Morales is scheduled for Friday morning.
