Following the unanimous decision of the Town Council at its last meeting, the Municipality is planning to remove about 150 abandoned cars from town and villages. In many neighbourhoods there are old cars left and abandoned, which not only makes the area look derelict it can also be a source of contamination, while occupying valuable parking spaces for residents.
The matter was suggested, to the council, by the Head of the Municipal Police, Panagiotis Koklas, who asked for its approval in order to take the relevant decision and the Financial Committee to start the procedure.
As far as procedure goes, the Council’s Police department will place a special sticker on a prominent part of the vehicle, marking it as abandoned. In the event that abandoned vehicles are fitted with registration plates, the owner is sought through the Ministry of Transport, who is informed by letter of its removal.
After 45 days of having the sticker placed on the car, if the vehicle is not removed by its owner it will then come under the possession of the Municipality and transferred to an authorized collection point.
The vehicle remains at the collection point for 10 days from the day of its collection.
If within this space of time the vehicle is sought by its owner, it is then returned.
If the vehicle is not sought after, then further processing, utilization, cutting and disposal of the vehicle go ahead.
