An increase in the price of souvlaki is inevitable.
And China is the reason.
The biggest increase is expected to be in souvlaki ‘yiro/giro as, during the grilling, meat looses a lot of weight.
The only thing for sure is that there will be no price lower than €2.40 or €2.50 in the ‘pita-yiro’, where up until now you could find for €2, €2.10 and €2.20. The base was €2. From 1st May at the latest if you find €2.40, it will be good. For the time being, the price of souvlaki on a wooden skewer ‘kalamaki’ may remain the same, or have a lesser price increase.
China is to blame for the rise in the price of souvlaki
Because there, due to plague in pigs, the Chinese were forced to be supplied pork from Europe and the suppliers, in Europe, considered it good to raise their prices. Since there was a great demand, prices rose. So far, prices have risen more than 17 to 18% and the next week they will reach 25%. Increases so far have been absorbed by the souvlaki shops, but they are unable to absorb any further increases. With them working with a profit of 12% to 15%, when the meat market has increased by 25%, plus the fact that prices of vegetables have not fallen, since summer, due to bad weather, there is no possibility of there not being an increase.
The same problem exists with beef, but it is greater with pork. adding increase in the price of fuel too, making the cost of transportation dearer too.
