Rare occurence, Mercury to pass Earth and Sun

For the star gazers, and for those who are just plain curious look out for Mercury.

In a rare celestial show tomorrow Monday the 11th of November, the planet Mercury will parade across the sun displaying itself to the whole world.

The event will take approximately 5 hours and will start around 14.0pm our time.

The solar system’s smallest, innermost planet will look like a tiny black dot as it passes directly between our Earth and the Sun.

WARNING.

Protect your eyes!!

As mercury is so small and so far away from Earth, you need special equipment. A Telescope or binoculars with a proper sun filter should be used to see it. You definitely do not look straight into the sun; you will damage your eyes. The first location to see the partial transit begin is at exactly 14.34:43p.m. At 17.19:46p.m Mercury will be the closest to the Sun’s centre.

Noting that this is the first time since 2016 and the transit of a planet across the face of the Sun is quite a rare occurrence. As seen from the Earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possible. There are approximately 13 transits of Mercury each century
