Restrictions for those who want to “get away” over Easter.

The days ahead are critical as it is expected to be clear if we will have a peak in the epidemiological curve. The eyes of the government and scientists are on the churches and the citizens’ gatherings over Easter. Have we controlled the spread of the virus or not? What is certain is that we will know after Easter.

The infectious disease specialist, Sotiris Tsiodras, warns that if the measures are abolished in 15 days, we will see the consequences of these things. “If things are OK. We should not see any co-occurrence, “he said. However, some seem to have been affected by the good weather and high temperatures and decided to break the traffic ban.

So, provided that the course of events has gone as  planned and there is no complacency, then from April 27th onwards, the discussions for the gradual lifting of the restrictive measures will begin.

However, the combination of the images seen in regards to the relaxation of measures taken such as, priests giving Holy communion in Koukaki and Corfu caused a stir within the government.  The prosecutor’s intervention, was at the request of the Minister of Justice, Costas Tsiaras and the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, thus showing how the government wants to keep to its strict measures.

For this reason, there are now discussions within the government even for a total ban on traffic circulation, even for a few hours over the Easter period. This is considered the ultimate solution in the event of a risk of further spread of the virus.

At the same time, precautionary checks are underway at tolls and on national roads and country roads to prevent a wave of exits to villages from Holy Thursday onwards. Ports and Coach stations will also be checked.

It is noted that the final measures decided by the Ministry of Public Order for the Holy Week and Easter, in order to prevent mass exits to other areas, are as follows:

  • All vehicles will be inspected without exception – and not selectively – which leave the area of Athens in the coming days.
  • Police will be instructed to carry out continuous, detailed checks of the documents they cite and if they find any ambiguities but also if there are suspicions of various “tricks” committed by the citizens, they will not be allowed to pass the blocks. This is regardless of the queues of cars that will be created and which can act as a deterrent for the unjustified departure of the residents from the city.
  • Similar checks will be made on other alternative routes (via Parnitha, Loutraki, Dervenochori, etc.). The assistance of police services from Corinth, Boeotia, etc. has already been requested to set up a blockade in any attempt to use another ring roads.
  • In case of removal of number plates, a clear order has been given not to have any gratuitous act of their return or cancellation of fines.

The reaction of the government to the cases observed in Roma camps, such as the camp in Drosero, Xanthi, is also immediate, although the picture from the samples of the laboratory test in Larissa is encouraging. However, in Larissa, despite the suggestion of the mayor Apostolos Kalogiannis to relax the perimeter of the quarantine, due to the few cases in the community, the Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias secretly rejected the idea.

Also restrictions for Holy Saturday have been mentioned. The Government spokesman, Mr Stelios Petsas said, ” It is prohibited to travel from one house to another during Holy Saturday and on Easter Sunday”. The idea is to stay home and not break the tough restrictions we all have been working so hard to keep. Our Government states that we will all see the results after the Easter period and depending on the results we may be able to lift slowly and steadily some of the restrictions that have been in place over the last month.
