An event that will be remembered, was the one that involved the rugby team of our island, the Athletic Club of Zakynthos, who found themselves at the grounds of Panathinaikos – Leoforas Alexandras Athens, where they took part in a tournament that Panathinaikos had organised.
The men and women sections of the club travelled to Athens, to participate in a playing experience that they surely will never forget, as it was their first appearance in rugby games. Although newly established, the Athletic Club of Zakynthos presented a competitive picture facing not only the ‘tritifili / three-leaves’ but also strong clubs which will have a separate role in the country.
The games were held on Sunday, 31/03, with the organization being perfect.
The games started at 11.00 and finished at 18.00, with teams and athletes having the best impressions.
Panayiotis Varypatis, one of the founding members of the Athletic Club of Zakynthos, but also coach of the male and female team said: “I am proud of the first appearance of our teams. We showed an excellent team image on and off the pitch. It was our first participation in competitions. Our goal was purely for the experience that will become the basis for the continuation of the team.
However, the mens team surprised us and won a game to find them next to last in the final score of the tournament”. This is the first tournament involving the Zakynthian team and its goal is to continue to compete dynamically.
It is noted that the Greek Rugby Federation has not yet been established and there is a desire to make it become a reality immediately. If this is done, the Athletic Club of Zakynthos will participate in the league, together with Panathinaikos who is leader in rugby, but also with other groups that have already created numerous competitive sections who want to fight for the best.
In the analytical scores of the event, the Athletic Club of Zakynthos ranked last in women and fourth in men.
