Telecommunications satellite Hellas Sat 4

With multiple compensatory measures in favour of the Greek State in relation to the initial agreement of 2001, which was amended two years ago, was launched yesterday, 06/02, the telecommunications satellite Hellas Sat 4, in the presence of the Secretary General for Telecommunications and Post Vasilis Maglaras.

Hellas Sat 4 will be set in course in Greek rights geostationary satellite position at 39th East Greenwich, complementing and enhancing the features and functions of the satellite Hellas Sat 3 which was launched in 2017.

Hellas Sat 4, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, has a mass of 6.5 tonnes and has a lifespan of more than 15 years, has 32 transponders with a total bandwidth of more than 1,000 MHz, covers geographical areas of Europe, Africa and Asia offering telecommunication services satellite internet, satellite television broadcasting, satellite data connections and trunk interconnections.

“Our country today, with the launch of Hellas Sat 4 secures and extends its rights in space and acquires significant new capabilities in the telecommunications sector. Possibilities to be exploited by our army and our countrys security forces for defensive purposes, civil protection purposes, but also as a development and research tool. Todays result is due to the many worthy public officials who worked selflessly for this purpose, as well as to Hellas Sat, which has been investing in space for almost two decades. We thank them warmly. We Greeks, when we work systematically and united, can achieve everything”, said Mr. Maglaras.

The importance of Hellas Sat 4 for Greece is particularly important because:

– Activates and safeguards new radio frequencies, enhancing and safeguarding Greek rights in space in geostationary position 39th East.

– It multiplies the exchanges in favour of the State on transponders and satellite capacity with activation [position, of the relevant articles of the renewed Agreement.

– It multiplies the capabilities of the Greek Public Sector Satellite Communications system (KLEIDDI – closed satellite network), giving opportunities to increase the number of users in hundreds, as well as supporting high-speed data applications such as video conferencing, high-definition image transfer, and more. KLEIDDI is also a part of the states exchanges under the renewed agreement, is in pilot operation since December 2018, providing communications to the State independently of any other telecommunications network, in areas that do not cover terrestrial telecommunications networks (sea, isolated areas etc.) even in the event of natural disasters that cause overloading or even destruction of existing communications networks.

– It provides the necessary bandwidth for the operation of two more core public-level satellite stations, also part of the renewed agreement, which will support vital public functions related to the defence and security of the country and its residents.

– Ensures the continued existence in the country, of the satellite control centre the corresponding high level of know-how and the corresponding specialized jobs.
