Retainer wall urgently needs repairs

One year has passed since the severe landslide that occurred on Filikon Street on the provincial road of Zakynthos – Alykes and now what needs to be done directly, is the necessary supporting projects in an area in which daily, dozens of vehicles pass, while just above the point where the landslide was there are houses.

However, currently in process are the studies that were completed a few days ago and handed over to the Technical Services Division of  The Region of the Ionian Islands, paving the way for the financing of the projects that need to be done and which are expected to require a significant amount of money.

The study was completed one year after the serious landslides in the area

Recalling that the study funded by the Regional Fund was commissioned after a negotiation with a research firm last spring, and the contract with the contractor was signed last July. The cost of the study amounted to 34,700 Euro, excluding VAT, and includes geotechnical surveys and studies, static studies and hydraulic studies.

According to the report of the Office to the Economic Committee of the The Region of the Ionian Islands, what is needed is to carry out the above study which arose “after the violent upset, due to extreme weather conditions, of the stone (possibly Venetian) of an existing retaining wall of Filiki Street before crossing with the municipal Agios Georgios Street, in the area of Bochali, Zakynthos. This wall straddled the road, which is part of the 11th provincial road of Zakynthos – Alykes. Although traffic has now been restored, there is a constant danger of a complete collapse of the wall and a complete cut off of road traffic, with adverse effects on the stability of adjacent homes ”

Repeating that the incident occurred a year ago, and meanwhile, both intense seismic activity in recent months and prolonged rainfall necessitate a serious interference in the area.
