The Greek islands are at the top of the demand for holidays from the Germans, said the president of the Association of Travel Agents (DRV) Norbert Fibig. He expressed the belief that this year it will be possible for tourists to return to their favourite destinations, such as Greece, Turkey and Spain.
According to Mr. Fibing at the ITB International Tourism Fair in Berlin, which is being held online this year, bookings for summer vacations are slowly increasing and currently reach 26% of bookings in 2020. There is a special demand for Greece and Turkey, he added.
However, he pointed out that it will be a success, if this summer the German tourist traffic returns to 50% of the pre-pandemic era. He typically said that organized tourism recorded a decline of 65% last year, “turning the market back by 30 years”.
With vaccines and more testing opportunities, however, the belief that we will soon be able to travel again is growing, said Mr. Fibing. He also predicted that this year there will be a willingness to make up for lost time, as last year the number who did not take a vacation at all was very high.
