Thessaloniki becomes location for action film Tin Soldier

Now Greece is opening up it’s not just tourism that’s getting a boost. This week it was announced that filming is due to start in Thessaloniki on the major action film, Tin Soldier.

On Tuesday Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the Regional Director of Central Macedonia met with the film’s producers Steven Chasman and Keith Kjarval from Current Entertainment and Unified Pictures, about the forthcoming film.

80% of the filming will take place in Thessaloniki including the YMCA, the suburb of Fragma in Thermi and the Millenium studios. The other 20% of filming will take place outside of Thessaloniki in locations such as Chalkidona. The cast includes Robert De Niro, Jamie Foxx, Scott Eastwood, and John Leguizamo. Mr de Niro will shoot his scenes exclusively in Thessaloniki.

It’s the fourth major film to be made in the area and it’s expected that it will bring €38million to Thessaloniki’s economy, Mr Tzitzikostas said, “You see the significant benefits to the economy, to the jobs and to the businesses involved. With this particular film, together with the four films, they have left in the economy of Thessaloniki and Central Macedonia about 60 million euros. It is therefore an emerging development force for central Macedonia, just as we envisioned 3 years ago when we first opened the film office in all of Greece. “We are here to continue this effort not only to make central Macedonia a center of audiovisual producers, but through these films to promote our place and thus achieve multiplier benefits for our region. I especially ask our fellow citizens in the areas where the shooting will take place to show tolerance and hospitality to the people of the production. I know that many times it is not easy, the daily life of all of us is disturbed, but it is good “

The film’s producer, Keith Kjarval said, “Thessaloniki is a very good place to stay and make movies. It is our pleasure to shoot the film here. We started looking for the location in October and at that time in the city it was relatively cold, and we were told it was like Cannes. After months of staying in Thessaloniki, we found that the culture is wonderful, and we are glad to be here.”
