At this time of year, turtles are nesting on beaches in the National Marine Park. Parts of the beaches are restricted and you will see nesting sites indicated by wooden structures, with labels on.
Whilst we all love to go to the beach and have fun, there are rules in place on these beaches to help protect and support the nests and their hatchlings. Sadly in the last week, there have been some incidents of tourists trying to help hatchlings into the sea, or disturbing nests.
Please be cautious when on the beach that has turtle nests. On most of the relevant beaches, there are boards noting what you can and can’t do, which include:
- Don’t disturb nests or move anything around the nests
- Don’t step on the nests. Walk around the nests and give them space
- Don’t drive mopeds or quads on any of these beaches!
- Avoid going to the beaches at sunset or in the dark when it becomes difficult to see the nests
- Don’t touch hatchlings, or interfere in any way
The beaches this applies to are ALL the beaches in the National Marine Park on the map above, including:
- Laganas
- Kalamaki
- Marathonisi (Turtle Island)
- Crystal
- Sekania
- Dafni
- Gerakas
If you do visit these beaches please take extreme care, and help to protect and support these wonderful. creatures in their home environment. A reminder that going off-road on the beach on quads is absolutely not allowed!
We have a more comprehensive post which was created with ARCHELON to cover all aspects of turtle support and protection. It’s worth reading.
