Zakynthos:- A case of an injured horse causes uproar in our community.

A case of horse injury in Alykes has been of intense concern to our local community and in turn our authorities since midnight on Tuesday (30/8).

According to reports, the horse tried to turn whilst attached to a carriage, kicked the iron bar of the carriage and injured itself, resulting in a pool of blood.

The police were informed about the incident, who arrived at the scene and initially informed the island’s veterinarians to go to Alykes and treat the horse.

Eventually, two of our vets responded and took care of the injured animal.

Despite what has been posted about this particular case on the internet, so far no evidence of abuse of the animal by its owner has emerged from the testimonies of the people who were at the scene.

Also, the Police Station Kastariou who took over the case examined and is still examining the issue from all sides, as the owner of the animal had previously concerned the authorities for a case of horse abuse and in fact, he had been fined heavily (30,000 euros), while the horse had also been taken from him .

Then, in 2018, a female tourist filed a lawsuit against him after she saw him taser the horse.

All pre-investigative material collected was given to the Prosecutor.

On the “Donkeys/Horses – Stop Exploitation/Abuse” Facebook page, the following post was made about the case:

THE MAN IN THE PHOTO IS THE VET

Zakynthos Alykes last night…

Horse injured by a carriage that it was pulling…

The animal was kicked to get up after falling down, and had injured its leg…

His boss, in order not to lose his daily wages, violently tried to lift the horse and continue the route he had to take. So the residents informed the police, And he was given first aid…

The prosecutor is now in position. after a complaint was made.

The gentleman depicted is the Veterinarian.

As animal abuse does not depict our Island and there are a lot of volunteer groups that work day and night to help any animal in distress, as our vets did in this case, Zakynthos Informer got in touch with one of the vets that was at the scene, Ifigeneia Patiri. Our first question to her was “Is the horse ok?” Our pet vet said the horse is doing well and she also stressed not only to us but had posted on her social media page that “There are families who make a living from dealing with carriages and horses and who care about them! But for those of you who simply exploit and abuse them, let me just inform you that the legislation is no longer a joke!
Once again, a big thank you to Tasos and a big thumbs up to the police department who did exactly what they had to,once again and especially to Mr. Theodosiou! Now it’s the prosecutor’s turn…
Also well done to the residents of the area who stayed by the horse until we left and to the 2 girls who stayed with us until very late!”
