A fire broke out yesterday in a field in the Municipal District of Kalamaki near hotels in the area. There was a large mobilization of the Fire Department at the scene.
According to information from the Deputy Governor of Zakynthos, Katerina Mothonaou, a warehouse was burnt down. 14 firefighters with 6 vehicles operated, while a firefighting helicopter (Ericsson) also participated in the extinguishing operation.
According to Mrs. Maria Mouzaki (Responsible for Civil Protection of the Regional Unit of Zakynthos) “two (2) hotels were at risk!! The fire started from a large gross private plot with grass over two (2) meters and rubble!! A warehouse and the outside of the house were completely burnt.”
With a post on her personal fb page, the Vice-Regional Governor of Zakynthos, points out “A serious fire incident in terms of location in Kalamaki almost put the residents and tourists adjacent to the hotels at risk.
The timely and exemplary intervention of the Fire Department did not allow the fire to spread.
Unfortunately, the fire hit the house of one of our fellow citizens.
Zakynthos Informer was also informed that one of our members, an English resident who happened to be in the area at the time, saw the flames and immediately called 199. Well done to our citizen who acted extremely quick and our fire fighting department in avoiding what could have been a very dangerous situation.
