Zakynthos:- Change in weather heading our way.

The temperature in our country will be rising over the next days, while in Europe the temperatures are already hitting “red”.
However, the heat wave in the Iberian Peninsula will not affect our country, as the melting mechanism prevents very hot air masses from reaching our region with the same force.

The professor of the Department of Environment of the Ionian University, Anastasios Kalimeris talked about the weather phenomena of the following days: “In the coming days, an increase in temperature is expected in the Ionian Sea and in the wider Greek area, due to the transfer of hot gas masses, mainly from the Western Mediterranean and Northwest Africa. The temperature will gradually increase especially over the weekend and Monday. On Sunday and Monday we are expected to have the highest temperatures in Zakynthos of the order of 35-36 degrees (in places in the interior of the island the maximum temperature can be 2-3 degrees higher and in coastal areas respectively 2-3 degrees lower). These temperatures, although high, are not unusual for the period we are going through since, indicatively, the average maximum July temperature in Zakynthos for the last 70 years amounts to 36 degrees Celsius. According to the existing forecasts, warming trends may occur again towards the end of next week (July 22-26). But that will become clear in the next five days. The readings are higher than this weekend.”

Helpful tips.

Due to the increase in temperature, citizens should be especially careful and avoid overexposure to the sun. The pathologist and diabetologist Sigouros Theodosis noted: “Indeed, high temperatures, over 38 degrees Celsius accompanied by a high percentage of humidity, can be dangerous for our health. Heat can affect each age differently.  We must wear a hat, drink plenty of fluids and wear light clothing, apply sunscreen and not stay in the sun too often.  Din’t push your body to its limits. It is observed that young people work and sit for long hours in the sun and get exhausted. Those most at risk are the elderly, those over 50 who have health problems, those who take chronic home oxygen therapy, the obese (makes it difficult to breathe), those with diabetes, heart disease and those with psychiatric problems. In the heat, people who take blood pressure medication are also affected, and in this group we must be careful because the heat creates intense sweating. The result of this is that those who take many hypertensive drugs if they do not reduce them in time, their pressure will drop and they will have more health issues.”

Especially for those facing psychiatric problems, he noted that they must be protected because they cannot openly express the symptoms they have and the discomfort they face. He noted that they should live in a cool environment and be protected.
Regarding heatstroke incidents and the use of air conditioners, he noted: “In recent years, with the widespread use of air conditioners, the percentage of those hospitalized with heatstroke is very low. After 2015, elderly people with severe heatstroke are rarely hospitalized. We were also treating young people who were pushing their limits and showing symptoms of mild heatstroke (high temperatures, severe headache and severe diarrhea). Normally, air conditioners should be used at temperatures of 24-27 degrees. It is good to be at a certain temperature, so that other issues such as colds, laryngitis and muscle pains are not caused.”
