Zakynthos:- Damage to the shipwreck! “now more than ever the shipwreck needs our help!”

Dionysios Tsoukalas. Part of the front of the ship “Panagiotis” has been ripped off due to extreme weather conditions.

We must act now in regards to the utilization and promotion of the “Shipwreck” of Zakynthos!

Unfortunately, after forty years the shipwreck, known as “Panagiotis” making itself a international landmark,  large pieces have began come away from the ship. Due to extreme weather conditions over last week or so , a large part of the front of the ship has been ripped away.

As a resident of the area, Dionysios Tsoukalas-Blackaki, tells us on his social media page, the height of the wave from the last bad weather, reached a height surpassing four metres, was one of the main reasons for the detachment of this large piece.

In a statement Mr Tsoukalas states:-

An appeal to the local governors of the island and specifically to the Municipality of Zakynthos and to the Holy Diocese of Zakynthos, for the plateau of “Shipwreck” and the beach of “Shipwreck”.

As the legal owners of the site, let’s leave egos behind and take initiation in caring for the common good of the island and the people of Zakynthos. They must act now for the utilization and promotion of the “Shipwreck”. In collaboration with the maritime tourism activity of the shipowners of Zakynthos.

“Under no circumstances should the” Shipwreck Management SA ” be established as the state wants.”

Zakynthos Informer has taken before and after pictures proving the damage done, whilst showing the importance of keeping the landmark in tact.  Let’s hope that something will be done by our authorities and soon.
