The personal intervention of the Minister of Tourism, Vasilis Kikilia, was needed for the mayor of Zakynthos, Nikitas. Aretaki, to change position of the watch tower from the front of the ship “Panagiotis” on the beach of Navagio, where the lifeguard tower that was orginally placed by the municipal authority.
The image of the massive tower in the middle of the beach and right in front of the ship, which went viral on social media, had provoked a number of reactions, critical and even mocking, from both residents and visitors of the island.
There was also a reaction from the competent Shipwreck Management Committee, which, should be noted, had not even been informed about this move by the Municipality.
The Municipality of Zakynthos, through the president of the municipal council, Mr. Kakolyris, claimed that the lifeguard tower was placed in the middle of the beach, in front of the ship known as ” Panagiotis”, after consultation with the Coast Guard.
Wednesday, May 25th during the meeting of the Municipal Council, the Mayor announced that the tower will be removed from the place where it was placed, after the intervention of the Minister of Tourism and will go a little further to the right of the ship.
