The strong earthquake of 5.4 degrees on the Richter scale that occurred at 10:36 on Thursday morning in the sea area between Kefalonia and Zakynthos, has caught the attention of seismologists.
As a result of the earthquake, a landslide from the cliff area at Navagio cove in Zakynthos was caused, as seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos had warned a few 24 hours ago, with the Zakynthos Port Authority prohibiting visitors from disembarking on the beach for precautionary reasons.
Tour guide Bozena Bielesz spoke to protothema.gr and recorded what happened at the “shipwreck” after the earthquake: “Let’s make it clear that the landslide did not happen on the beach. Not a single pebble fell on the beach. What you see in videos and photos is offshore on the right side of the cliffs. No rock fell, only stones and gravel fell that’s why all this white cloud was created. I, along with other people were at the beach at that time. We were swaying and immediately understood what was happening. Those of us who were seated understood.”
The president of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, spoke to national newspaper protothema.gr.
“It was a noticeable earthquake in Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Aftershocks are definitely expected in these areas, and I would even like to say that yesterday’s earthquake happened on the same fault as the big earthquake in Kefalonia in 2014, the fault that exists between Kefalonia and Lefkada. Attention is needed, we are not worried but we are monitoring it”
It is noted that after the 5.4 Richter earthquake and until 11:16 on Thursday morning, 7 other earthquakes occurred in the wider area with a magnitude greater than 3.7 on the Richter Scale.
Director of the Geodynamic Institute, Akis Tselentis,
As the director of the Geodynamic Institute, Akis Tselentis, explained about the 5.4 Richter earthquake “it is an area in which there is a large fault west of Kefalonia, in the southern part we had the earthquake and it is the point where the plate sinks”.
He appeared reassuring, speaking to SKAI that “at the moment we do not see migration of epicenters on the Lixouri fault” estimating that “the phenomenon will end here with a certain number of aftershocks that will not be felt as they will occur at sea”.
Professor of Geology Gerasimos Papadopoulos
For his part, Professor of Geology Gerasimos Papadopoulos noted on his post on Facebook that “there is practically no risk with the data so far. However, we are still not sure if it was the main earthquake.”
Zakynthos Informer would also like to bring to you attention that the area is closed until further notice, due to safety reasons.
