This week, a new TV documentary called Drain the Ocean appeared on UK TV. The new Channel 5 documentary series uses scientific exploration and digital recreation to explore maritime mysteries at various locations across the world. The first episode called “Atlantis, draining the lost city” features a number of locations including Alykes/Alykanas in Zakynthos.
This underwater phenomenon at Alykes/Alykanas that was first discovered by local resident and diver Pavlos Voutos in 2013. The site is an unusual mix of large stones and rocks, Some look like flagstones, others as though they’re carved by man to hold up columns. Since the incredible discovery the site has been visited by experts and there are still ongoing to discussions as to whether it’s manmade or natural. Drain the Ocean, which features Pavlos and experts in various scientific fields, explores the underwater site The programme “drains back the ocean” from the Alykes/Alykanas coast, using digital technology, removing the sea to allow viewers and scientist a closer look, in order to try and discover more about the site and its contents.
