A group of Federal Gamekeepers, in mid-July in Zakynthos were on our Island to carry out their official duties.
On the evening of July 11th, complaints were received that in the wider area of Anafonitria some people were engaging in illegal hare hunting at night.
Eventually they were able to locate a person carrying a shotgun on a motorcycle with the lights turned off, moving in the area. They followed and managed to immobilize the person in order to arrest the poacher whom they recognized. But he managed to run away on foot, evading arrest…
For this matter, the Board of Directors of G’KOP issued the following announcement:
“In the middle of July, a group of our Federal Gamekeepers went to Zakynthos in order to carry out their official duties there. On the evening of July 11, complaints were received that in the wider area of Anafonitria some people were engaging in illegal hare hunting at night. So in order to check this complaint, they went to the specific area, where they actually heard gunshots. After a while they saw a person carrying a shotgun on a motorbike with the lights off, moving in the area. They followed and managed to immobilize the person in order to arrest the poacher whom they recognized. But he managed to run away on foot, evading arrest. The Police Dept of Zakynthos was immediately informed and the immediate arrest procedure was initiated.
The prescribed procedures were followed, the means of illegal hunting were confiscated and a relevant lawsuit was filed against the person at the Directorate of Forestry of Zakynthos, as provided by the written provisions of the Forestry Legislation.
Let us point out that our association strictly condemns all forms of poaching, since this phenomenon destroys (mainly in the eyes of public opinion) our image as hunters. These people, the poachers, are not hunters (as the word that characterizes them suggests), they illegally harvest what does not belong to them and exhibit predatory behavior towards the prey. So they should be isolated from us legal hunters and we should all understand that to report similar poaching phenomena is not “ruffianism” but maximum help to the prey, ourselves and our traditional hunting in general.
