Concerned, our fellow citizens are watching the latest developments in the case of the problematic waste collection in Zakynthos and wonder if the new feud between the local MP and Mayor will bring results. by representatives of institutions, community presidents and many citizens. A few days ago the new Deputy Mayor of Cleaning Mr.. Kokkoris and the head of the Cleaning Department Mr. Tourkakis resigned… Garbage is accumulating into mountains and the situation has reached the point of no return.
The political pressures that are exerted are enormous and last Tuesday night in Zakynthos MP Dionysis Aktypis, in an interview with the main news bulletin of IONIAN “opened his cards” and expressed his willingness to intervene in order to find a solution to the two big problems that are currently bothering the people of Zakynthos. These problems have to do with the collection of waste and the management of wastewater.
Communication with Hellenic Ministry of the Interior affairs and Decentralized administration
Thus began a cycle of contacts and discussions with the Ministry of Interior.
Following these developments, the Office of the Member of Parliament issued the following announcement:
“These days, the MP of Zakynthos is in constant communication with the political leadership of the Ministry of Interior. MP Dionysis Aktypis is looking for a substantial and immediate solution to the huge problem of waste collection on our island.
The Member of Parliament has contacted by telephone both the Deputy Minister of Interior Mr. Stelios Petsas and the Secretary General of Interior and Organization Mr. Michalis Stavrianoudakis.
Also, on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, the Member of Parliament sent a letter to the Coordinator of the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese-Western Greece-Ionian, Mr. Dionysios Panagiotopoulos, asking him to do everything possible in order to have a quick solution to the problem. The tourist season has taken on huge proportions, threatening the health of the citizens of our island, discrediting Zakynthos as a tourist destination and complicating the daily life of all of us.
The MP stated the following: “Today I have been in contact, again with the Coordinator of the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese-Western Greece-Ionian Mr. Dionysios Panagiotopoulos, who informed me that in a telephone conversation he had with the Mayor of Zakynthos Mr. Nikitas Aretakis, no assistance is needed and within 5 days he will give a final solution to the problem, which according to him is exclusively his responsibility.
I call on the Mayor to take immediate action and take specific initiatives so that garbage is collected directly from the streets of our island.
I must emphasize that the way of waste collection should be in full compliance with the principles and rules of environmental protection and in no case should it be done carelessly and in a way that creates environmental pollution “.

The letter by the Member of Parliament
The MP then published the letter he sent to the Coordinator of the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian, Mr. Dionysios Panagiotopoulos.
As he states: “Following our telephone communication, I am sending you the relevant letter in order to point out the criticality of the situation, which has developed in Zakynthos, due to the non-existent collection of waste.
More specifically, the most touristic roads of our island, in fact in the middle of the tourist season, which are full of garbage, which overflows from the bins, with public health and safety at risk.
Now, the situation is getting worse every day, causing strong reactions from residents, businessmen and of course visitors to our island.
It is inconceivable, in fact, that the Municipal Authority has crossed its arms and does not take initiatives to solve the problem, which is in danger of ruining this year’s tourist season, which after years is expected to exceed the number of visitors even in the best years before the health crisis.
Mr. Panagiotopoulos,
I am sure that you will take every possible action on your part in order to give substantial, immediate and effective solutions to the major problem that Zakynthos is currently facing.
For my part, I am at your disposal and willing to do what I can, so that with coordinated moves and a specific plan we can solve the problem that plagues the society of Zakynthos “.
The MP’s interview with IONIAN and the “conflict” with the Mayor.
Mr. Aktypis in his interview with IONIAN, among other things, stressed that: “Because I happen to be an MP who, four days a week I am here and I accept the protests of people because they can not find a response from the Municipal Authority… I want to say that the Deputy Mayor, who is also the next in line Mayor, clearly said that we have garbage trucks and bulldozers … The Municipal Authority has never come to ask for the help from the Member of Parliament. I went to the government and informed about the image that Zakynthos presents. I said that there is rubbish in the streets, that there is not enough water, that the sewage is in the sea, but there must be the competent institution, which will say that it is facing this problem and is looking for a concrete solution. This solution is funding! Then I am responsible to find this funding… On Friday when I will be in Zakynthos I will request a meeting with the Mayor to discuss the problem that exists and for him tell me if he needs my help. Even in the Regional Council we met he told me that Zakynthos will be cleaned in five days… ”

The Commercial Association demands that the island be put in a state of emergency, that the local self-government and the MP take initiatives, that the government be informed and that the municipal councilors resign in protest, due to the explosive situation on the island, caused by waste and wastewater management.
In the announcement issued by the Association, they emphasize, among other things: “Unfortunately, our fears for the current downstream of our island are daily confirmed in the worst way. The chaotic situation that led Zakynthos to the municipal authority and personally to the Mayor Mr. Nikitas Aretakis has already begun to leave its negative mark on our businesses both in the city and in the tourist areas. After the garbage we are very afraid that the collapse of the biological and sewerage networks will come to complete the picture of the disaster we are experiencing. We call on the elected representatives of all levels of government and the Member of Parliament to take initiatives before it is too late. Immediately inform the government and the competent ministries after the island is first put in a state of emergency to take action. The inadequacy of the municipal authority and its inability to manage the current dangerous situation for all of us must not continue. We call on the municipal councilors of all factions to resign in protest, thus pushing for immediate solutions. ”

Complaints, tensions, complaints and the barrel has no bottom… The problems “drown” Zakynthos and unfortunately, there is no mood for real cooperation, so good is not going to arise immediately for the place… In the middle of the tourist season, the situation is TRAGIC.
