An increase in traffic accidents in Zakynthos with victims being tourists travelling on quads.
The concern is expressed by the employees in the field of health and especially within our local Hospital, as the increase of traffic accidents and especially the incidents involving tourists who travel around on quads was reported by ermisnews.gr.
What has become known is that these incidents are constantly increasing and in recent days there are many tourists who were injured and taken to the emergency room.
Indicatively, it should be mentioned that in a 24 hour period, four people involved in traffic accidents with quads were taken to the emergency room of the Zakynthos hospital and in one of these cases the person was seriously injured.
Another issue that is raised this year at the beginning of the tourist season concerns the condition of the roads and the road network as a whole, which needs immediate maintenance and big potholes should be filled in.
Tourism entrepreneurs for their part, point out that our island has not been prepared in time to welcome many people, as we have seen in Zakynthos in 2019 other years before the pandemic.
Speaking to -E-, the doctor of the Hospital, Tassos Sidirokastritis, who several times receives such traffic accidents in the emergency hours at night, stated that this year we have not started well with the traffic accidents but also with many other incidents
“In the tourist areas of Zakynthos we see that hotels have quads and rent them to tourists”.
Three to four traffic accidents with quads took place on Wednesday night and we are still on May 11th. The road network in Zakynthos is damaged and it is not only the drivers’ fault but also the roads. But I ask what will happen in July if we now have so many serious cases that are being treated… They are young people.
There is bureaucracy and transfer of responsibilities, but in the end the result is the same and does not matter if it concerns the Municipality or the Region.
It is tragic to have 3 to 4 incidents a day in May. People come here for holidays and their lives are in danger. Once the quads were 50cc’s and now they are 600. This is because they rent them with the car license. Those who drive them are exposed even if they wear a helmet.
“We are waiting for the government to legislate on these issues,” said Mr. Sidirokastritis, among others.
