The busy beach of Tsilivi is the only one in Zakynthos that has a lifeguard. Within the last ten days of August, our island was faced with serious issues in regards to the safety of bathers and of those who have already lost their lives at sea.
The problem of lifeguard coverage of the coasts is one of the most serious facing the Municipality of Zakynthos this summer and what is needed now is timely planning for next summer, as this year the Port Authority has already confirmed fines of tens of thousands of euros that will be called to paid by the Municipality.
The issue of lifeguard coverage of the beaches occupied the last meeting of the Municipal Council that took place on July 30 when it was raised by the municipal councilors of the opposition. At this meeting, the Mayor – who received strong criticism for inaction and complete lack of initiatives to have lifeguards on the beaches – said that this is not the first time that the Municipality is unable to make specific recruitments and that the problem pre-existed. However, he acknowledged that this year was particularly difficult, due to the increased demands of the new Presidential Decree but also the lack of demand for the positions that were announced.
“The problem has not been solved properly for years. “This year was even more serious as due to the pandemic, the lifeguard training did not operate,” said the Mayor, justifying the current situation.
Among other things, the Mayor reiterated that the cost to cover the beaches reached 1.5 million, while there was a reluctance by private companies to cover a member of the equipment.
Although the Mayor noted that every effort was made to cover the beaches with tenders, announcements and contacts with companies, the opposition insisted on criticism, arguing that the goal of the municipal authority was not to spend money on this issue.
