On Monday, August 16, 2021, the Voluntary Group of Zakynthos travelled across the mainland to the fire victims. Their focus was on the Region of the prefecture of Ilia for the distribution of items collected throughout the last week.
The members of the Volunteer Group, Christos and Spyros Karydis, Dimitris Markesinis, Pavlos and Lambrinos Lazanis, George Panagiotopoulos, Anna Besi and Louise Morfis, went directly to the fires stricken areas with humanitarian aid with the food collected.
Their first stop was the village of Platanos, where the group met with the President of the village who in turn took the group to families in the area. There they saw first hand the destruction caused by the fires.
After leaving Platanos, the group took the road to the village of Pefkon. Again with the help of the locals the team quickly distributed the supplies they needed.
The next stop was the village of Lala. On the way to the village of Lala they met fire brigades from other states and countries that reached the villages.
There, the group met the volunteers of the social kitchen “O allos Anthropos”. This group cooked for fire victims who had no electricity or water. They also offered help to remote and inaccessible villages where it was impossible to reach due to falling trees and electricity polls.
After the village of Lala, the Voluntary Team of Zakynthos arrived in Ancient Olympia where there were met by the Deputy Mayor of the area. With the help of other volunteers the team was able to unload the truck so that supplies could be sent to the surrounding areas.
The whole operation started a few days ago in Zakynthos when it was announced that products will be collected for the fire victims of the prefecture of Ilia. Thus, drop off points were created, the shops POWER UP and business EURO HIRE became the centre points . Then other places were created in Kalamaki, “Costas Coffee Zante”, “Costas pool bar” and Fergus Sings the Blues.
Gradually other companies offered assistance “Smart Rental Cars” at the Airport, “Nefis Travel” in Tsilivi, “Montes Supermarket” in Alykes, “Pet Vet Patiris”.
Organizations such as XEN Zakynthos, the Velonokastasi team (Dionysia Paraschi), Levante Ferris, who in turn offered free transport to and from Kyllini, 1st Primary School of Kampos, Zakynthos Teachers Association, Kindergartens “Louloudotopos” and Palataki”, EKON constructions, Volunteers Dionysia, Byron, Mike and the whole Euro Hire team not only helped with the packing but helped load the truck so it was ready to leave.
The Volunteer Team would like to send huge THANK YOU to everyone in general as without the support of the people of Zakynthos this mission would have been impossible.

During the interviews with Presidents of the villages they travelled to, they talk about the hardship they have experienced. A note being made that they will continue to struggle due to the months ahead where most have also lost their income source, that being the land they live from.
The Volunteer Group of Zakynthos will be continuing their efforts, however theyare unable to collect clothing of any sort UNLESS they are new and sealed, due to covid restrictions.
