Zakynthos Airport Dionysios Solomos, your local airport!

Zakynthos Airport

Zakynthos Airport is an international airport serving hundreds of thousands of tourists each year but it wasn’t always an international hub for holiday travel. Originally the site was an old lake in part of the Zakynthos plains, used for farming, with no plane in sight.

Located to the east of the village of Ampelokipi and North-West of Kalamaki, this area was made into a basic airstrip in WW2. When the island was invaded in WW2, invading forces arrived by small seaplanes and boats. To get supplies and other items to the island, the Italians and Germans created a small airbase.

Once the war ended the site was created into an airport, which over time, has grown into the one we all know now. Zakynthos Airport Dionysios Solomos.
