How to deal with our waste during the pandemic. The Volunteer Group of Zakynthos offer advice.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR WASTE DURING THE PANDEMIC

  1. It is important to know that all the protection measures we use, such as gloves, hand wipes, masks, disinfectants, are NOT RECYCLABLE and must be placed in sealed garbage bags.

  1. In a period of pandemic, we DO NOT LEAVE GARBAGE BAGS OPEN or half-open. We use the special bags that close with a string and we close them as tightly as possible.

  1. Place the garbage bags WITHIN THE BINS and close the bins so that there is no contact or possibility of contamination (those who may even accidentally stumble into bags outside the bins), or animals such as stray or passing pets. Do not leave bags outside and around the bins. In case the bin is already full, we look for another, nearby bin with available space or we keep our bag at home for another day or for as long as needed.

  1. Avoid work that produces extra amounts of waste, such as repairs.  DON’T THROW OUT ON THE STREETS BULKY OBJECTS, such as furniture or appliances that easily become hotbeds of germs.

  1. The bins are very easily turned into areas of bacteria or worse, so the Municipality must regularly disinfect them and the citizens must open them and close them with the special pedals, where they exist, or with gloves where there are no pedals.

IF YOU ARE IN QUARANTINE OR YOU SUFFER FROM COVID-19 OR ARE RESTRICTED TO HOUSE ARREST DUE TO COVID-19

  1. DO NOT RECYCLING (plastics, paper, metals), to protect both the collection workers and those who work in material sorting centres that often separate recyclable materials by hand.

  1. Fill the bags of mixed waste up to 2/3 at most, tie tightly and place it in a 2nd bag and close tightly. Make sure that both bags are strong, without holes, and in case of doubt use a 3rd bag. Do not use the bags we get from supermarkets, food bags, etc.

  1. Use gloves to tie and close the bags and transfer to the trash. As soon as you return home, throw the gloves used in the next garbage bags that you will use. Tie tightly.

IF WE ARE HEALTHY AND WE DON’T HAVE COVID-19

– Continue recycling as before but take care not to place inside the recyclable the protective means we use, such as gloves, hand wipes, masks, disinfectants, etc. because they are NOT RECYCLABLE and must be placed in the mixed waste bags

– Fill the bags of mixed waste up to 2/3 at most and tie tightly.

– It is in the interest of the safety of all of us to use gloves to close and tie the bags and transfer our waste to the trash.
