In the last 24 hours, the suspected cases of coronavirus have increased within Zakynthos.
So far, a total of 121 samples have been taken from our fellow citizens. Of which were sent to Pasteur to determine if they were infected with the virus.
Fortunately, the 115 samples were negative. However, there is currently concern among the hospital’s medical staff that several more samples need to be sent for testing every day. In fact, it is possible that from the moment the regular clinics within the hospital started operating, suspicious cases will increase even more in the next period of time.
In recent statements to our local newspaper, HMERA, the Chairman of the Infectious Diseases Committee of the hospital and Microbiologist, Athanasios Markou, had pointed out.
“Based on the data for the region of Zakynthos and the official announcements that the R0 (the possibility to transmit the virus) is below 1 and therefore below 0.5%, if we assume that we apply strict measures and listen to the instructions given, which are in other words proposed for this period, then I think we will do well. In all of this there is a delicate balance. They are all links in a chain. In order for the chain to work properly, each link must do its job and the previous and so on must work properly. If people start ignoring measures and go out and go here, there and everywhere without wearing their mask where they should, if more people start to get in the cars together and don’t wear masks, if we start going to cafes and eat and drink without taking the measures that are provided, things may not go well.
It is important to note that no new cases have been recorded (11/5/2020) within the Ionian Region. Zakynthos still remains at 6 cases in total fromthe beginning of the Pandemic untill now. Of those 6 cases one death was recorded due to severe underlying health problems.
