Earthquake in Crete – Reports of damage to houses and shops – Citizens worried on the streets
Many people took to the streets after the intense seismic activity.

Calls for three trapped citizens have been received by the Fire Service after the strong earthquake of 5.8 Richter in Crete.
According to a representative of the Fire Brigade, two people have been trapped in Arkalochori, Heraklion.
One of them who was working in a church, part of which collapsed after the strong earthquake, unfortunately has died.
The second trapped is in a nearby village, in Patsidero and has been trapped in his home.
Reports of a woman missing after a supermarket wall collapsed.
Firefighters are rushing to the scene.
It should be noted that so far EKAB has received calls for 9 injured from the earthquake. Seven slightly injured, all have been taken to hospital for further examinations.

Destroyed buildings and churches fell
At the same time, Manolis Fraggakis, Mayor of the affected area of Pediada Minoa, spoke to SKAI about the loss.
“We have not been fully informed yet” he stressed and added that he has no information about the injured but from the first information some dilapidated buildings and two churches have fallen.
There are no reports of material damage and bodily injuries, the event is very recent, the Mayor of Heraklion, Vassilis Lambrinos, stressed to SKAI regarding the strong earthquake that struck Crete.
The Mayor stated that the earthquake was strongly felt as it had a low epicenter.
“There are many on the street,” he said, noting that efforts are being made to evacuate schools by students while there is no question of communication difficulties.
According to T.V channel ERT information, the church of the Prophet Ilia in Arkalochori completely collapsed and resulted in the death of a man who was working on the spot and was crushed by the rubble.
The man, after being released by the men of the Fire Brigade, was received by EKAB.
There were other workers at the scene, but they were outside the sanctuary and did not appear to have been injured, according to state television.
People are remaining on the streets and children have been sent home from school.
