Lekkas at Newsbomb.gr about the earthquake in Crete: We did not expect it, we do not know if it is the main

Earthquake in Crete: The island is “shaking” from Tremors – What does Professor of Dynamic Tectonics, Applied Geology & Natural Disaster Management, Mr. Efthymis Lekkas, say about the phenomenon on Newsbomb.gr.

The Richter of the earthquake has now been changed from 5.8Richter to 6 Richter moments ago on ERT T.V

An alarm has been sounded in Crete after the strong earthquake of 6 Richter that hit the island on Monday morning.

According to information from Newsbomb.gr, a fellow human being lost his life in the earthquake that occurred in Crete on Monday morning. The unfortunate man was a worker and at the time of the earthquake he was working in the sanctuary where its dome collapsed.

It is noted that a group of EMAK with C130 went directly to the island to assist in the release, while an additional group of competent ministers will go within the day to autopsy damage in the villages of the area affected by the earthquake (Arkalochori etc).

The seismic vibration of 6 Richter has been followed by other seismic vibrations, of magnitude 4.3 Richter and smaller.

The Professor of Dynamic Tectonics, Applied Geology & Natural Disaster Management, Mr. Efthymis Lekkas, spoke to Newsbomb.gr about the vibration.

According to him, the earthquake was unexpected as after the seismic tremors that had been recorded on the island recently, they certainly did not expect an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale.

The strong earthquake in Crete struck like lightning in the air. After the seismic tremors that had been recorded on the island recently, we did not expect such a big earthquake. There is still no estimate if it was the main earthquake. “People need to be calm and should stay out of their homes, at least until the afternoon,” Lekkas said.

Earthquake protection measures
Citizens can find specific instructions on what to do during and after an earthquake on the website of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection. The instructions are as follows:

When there is an earthquake
If you are in the house

Keep your cool.
Lie under a sturdy piece of furniture (table, desk, desk), kneel and hold his foot with your hands.
If there is no durable furniture, kneel in the middle of the room, reducing your height as much as possible and protect your head and neck with your hands. Avoid large glass surfaces (windows, glass partitions) or furniture and objects that may injure you.
Do not try to leave the house.
Do not go out on the balcony.
If you are in a tall building

Move away from windows and exterior walls.
If you are in an entertainment venue, mall or department store

Keep your cool.
Stay in the area until the vibration is over.
Do not be fooled by the panicked crowd that moves erratically towards the exits because you risk being trampled.
If you are outdoors

Move away from areas under buildings, telephone or electrical cables.
If you have a bag or briefcase with you, cover your head with them.
If you are in the car

Take refuge in an open area and carefully stop the car so as not to obstruct traffic.
Avoid passing through tunnels, bridges or overpasses.

What to do after the earthquake if you are inside the house.

Prepare for any aftershocks.
Carefully check yourself and those around you for possible injuries
If there are seriously injured do not move them.
Evacuate the building from the stairwell (do not use the elevator), after first turning off the electricity, gas and water switches.
Take refuge in an open and safe place.
Follow the instructions of the Authorities and do not pay attention to gossip.
Do not use your car unnecessarily so as not to become an obstacle to the work of rescue teams.
Use your landline or mobile phone in exceptional cases, as it causes the telephone networks to be overloaded.
Avoid entering your home if you see damage, broken wires, gas or gas leaks.
