In the last week, the Greek Interior Ministry has announced that 326 municipalities across Greece will receive financial support to be used for guarding against wildfires.
The municipalities that will receive the largest amount of aid – based on fire risk and population size – are central Corfu, Chios, Mytilene, Oropos in Attica, Rhodes, and Western Lesvos.
The good news is that Zakynthos hasn’t missed out on this financial support and the island will receive €125,000 to assist with the preventative clearing of areas that could be problematic during the fire season. Areas would include camps, olive groves, parks and other public spaces that could be under threat. Areas such as forests with dry undergrowth are also on the list.
The full breakdown of funds agreed are:
Agrinio – €144,000
Argos-Mycenae – €145,000
Athens – €118,000
Central Corfu – €155,400
Chios – €187,800
Corinth – €129,000
Dionysos – €131,700
Grevena – €120,000
Mytilene – €159,300

Tripoli – €149,000
Volos – €139,000

It’s good to see Zakynthos has been considered in this important round of funding.
