Greece and Spain discuss tourism links

At the end of April, Olympia Anastasopoulou, Secretary-General for Tourism Policy and Development attended the extraordinary General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Madrid, Spain. After the General Assembly, Ms Anastasopoulou went on to meet with Fernando Valdes Verelst the Deputy Tourism Minister for Spain, to discuss the possibility of agreeing and signing a memorandum of cooperation relating to tourism.

Ms Anastasopoulou spoke to several media sources about promoting alternative Greek destinations to Spanish tourists, including Athens on the Greek mainland and the islands beyond. Ms Anastasopoulou said, “The memorandum would focus mainly on ways to enhance our cooperation in thematic tourism forms and exchange best practices in the field of tourism. While Spanish travellers opt for Greece’s culture and ‘sea & sun’ products, the ministry is intending to promote additional tourism forms including conferences, sports, agrotourism, and mountain and wine tourism, in order to offer holistic tourism experiences.”

Whilst on her trip Ms Anastasopoulou also took time to meet with Andreas Pappas the Spanish-Greek Chamber of Commerce Chairman. The two discussed enhancing tourism between Spain and Greece by using existing business partners in the Chamber of Commerce, including sectors such as clothing, cosmetics, herbal products, jewellery, and fisheries.

As with other articles recently, Greece seems to be working hard to cement strong tourism links with many countries in an effort to try and boost their tourism in the coming years.
