Greece:- Parthenon Sculptures: Return of fragments and a new message from Mitsotakis from the Acropolis.

Parthenon Sculptures: Return of fragments and a new message from Mitsotakis from the Acropolis.

The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, sent a clear message to Britain regarding the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece – What he said at the event for the return of Sculpture fragments from the National Archaeological Museum to the Acropolis Museum.

The message of reunification of all parts of the Parthenon, with the return of the Sculptures from the British Museum, was sent by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the occasion of today’s event for the return of fragments of the Parthenon Sculptures from the National Archaeological Museum, Akros Museum. “This return journey alone sends a strong message of reunification of all parts of this unique monument to humanity,” the prime minister told the Acropolis Museum.

Speaking at the Parthenon Hall, Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined that “it is a first but very important step in the effort to gather here, at the Acropolis Museum, all the smaller and larger parts of the Parthenon decoration that are now scattered in various museums around the world. ». After all, as the Prime Minister stated, “the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures is not a matter of distance, because, whether they are here in Athens or anywhere in the world, their destination is only the Holy Rock and this great museum.”

Kyriakos Mitsotakis noted that “the National Archaeological Museum shows a path of responsibility and scientific consistency. This path is followed by the Greek state as a whole, upgrading to the highest governmental level the return of the Parthenon sculptures from the British Museum. A request from UNESCO, now a request from the majority of public opinion in the United Kingdom as well. “But also an issue that I believe Prime Minister Boris Johnson personally understands, as I found out at our recent meeting.”

“With classical studies, I, a lover of ancient Greece, am sure that he will not block any possible future agreement, removing any possible political obstacles. “If necessary, by amending the British law on museums in order to facilitate the reunification of the Parthenon sculptures,” the Prime Minister said for his British counterpart. “There are no more substantial arguments to delay this important issue of the times and of Greek-British relations. This need, after all, will be reminded daily to my friend Boris by his own daughter, to whom he also gave the name of Iris “, noted Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Movement of high symbolism and substance “

The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stressed that “this movement is not just symbolic, it is absolutely essential” and noted that the Parthenon Sculptures “are organic and integral members of a complex architecture and artistic creation, as they constitute a single and indivisible natural, aesthetic and mental meaning.” entity”.

Ms. Mendoni referred to the struggle of Greece for the repatriation of the Sculptures which began almost immediately with the formation of the Greek state and then was internationalized and put on a systematic basis in the 1980s by Melina Mercouri. Closing her greeting and inviting the Prime Minister to the podium, the Minister of Culture said: “Let me wish, 2022 to be the year that will mark the countdown for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to the birthplace of Athens.”

In the effort to collect all the fragments of the Parthenon decoration that are in various museums around the world, the reunification of the fragments of the National Archaeological Museum is the first step.

The fragments come from the frieze, the metopes and the gables of the Parthenon. One of them, the upper part of a young head, is connected with the figure of the second from the left supervisor of the Panathenaic procession, depicted in stone VII of the eastern frieze. It is the only authentic fragment of the stone in the Acropolis Museum as the rest is in the Louvre Museum. The second head is attributed to the first chaplain from the left of the Panathenaic procession, depicted on stone IX of the northern frieze. The event ended with the placement of the fragments by the conservators in their permanent places.

We all hope that this act is a new beginning for the restoration of the Sculptures ”
The Chairman of the Board of the Acropolis Museum Dimitris Pantermalis stressed that today is important for the Museum. “I do not think there is another monument in the world that is so fragmented and efforts have been made for years now to reconnect the pieces. Reconnection is a special process and that is why we started quite early “said Mr. Pantermalis to add:” This monument is currently receiving some of its fragments and we all hope that this act is a new beginning in the issue of restoration of Sculptures of the Parthenon “.

“They come to the Acropolis Museum today, first from our own country, to be an example of articulation and other fragments and stones that have occasionally scattered in European capitals,” said Nikos Stampolidis, General Manager of the Acropolis Museum.

“If, as they say, the beginning is half of everything, the act taking place here today has come to be the precursor to the reunification of the large Parthenon sections in the British Museum, a reunion awaiting the monument itself, as it is reflected, both in the majority of the will of the British people but also in the global will, as it was expressed by the UNESCO decision, on September 29 “, Mr. Stampolidis pointed out.
