Greece:- The “block” of unvaccinated citizens – What measures will be announced.

What is the reasoning of the government – What the government spokesman said – The rate of vaccinations is increasing

The government’s decision to “block” the entry of those citizens who have not been vaccinated against coronavirus in indoor entertainment venues is final. The rationale behind the government’s strategy is that “entertainment is a choice, not a necessity.” Government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou in fact on Saturday morning stressed that there is no case to impose a universal lockdown as economic activity and social life can not be suspended again in the fall.

The government staff is not going to change its position on access to indoor restaurants, cafes, bars, theatres and cinemas, which will remain pure (ie only for vaccinated), while the same applies to sports stadiums.

This practically means that as the weather conditions worsen the unvaccinated will not be able to enter entertainment venues, while on the contrary the vaccinated will be able to enter without hindrance, simply by displaying the relevant digital certificate and their identity.

Oikonomou’s statements

The above was also announced by the government representative Giannis Oikonomou, speaking to SKAI, on Saturday morning. Regarding the new measures, he stated that they will probably be announced on Tuesday and then gave some clarifications about what they will include. “I think on Tuesday the operating framework of the economy and society regarding the pandemic will be announced. “Either these people will be vaccinated, or they will get sick, endangering society as a whole, and those who have been vaccinated.” “With the numbers of vaccinations we do not count votes, we count human lives,” he stressed. At the same time, he stated that the restoration of the mask for everyone outdoors is likely if the experts suggest it.

Regarding the measures that will apply to the unvaccinated, he stated that “for specific areas there will be specific criteria that have to do with the nature of the activity, for example shopping there are other measures such as restricting people to wear a mask. Those who have been vaccinated will have more options in their free time and comfort in their movements, non vaccinated people will have to have laboratory tests 1-2 times a week from September onwards at their own expense, at a predetermined price “. He even stressed that there is no case of a universal lockdown.

“Entertainment is a choice, not a necessity “

The rationale behind the government’s strategy is that going out for leisure is a choice rather than a necessity – as opposed to work or buying goods.

Therefore, “since the unvaccinated refuse to be protected from the coronavirus while all vaccines are now available, the need to protect public health against the pandemic means that their own gradual return to normalcy will take place at different rates,” government sources said.

How schools and universities will work

Other areas of activity will operate in a similar way, such as education at the beginning of the new school and academic year. Teachers, professors and faculty members of universities who do not have a Covid-19 vaccination or recovery certificate should undergo a laboratory test (PCR or Rapid) twice a week, under the responsibility of the employee.

Students must present the self test result, which is also provided free of charge (students 12 years of age and older can also be vaccinated and have a vaccination certificate).

The rate of vaccinations is increasing

Recently, there has been an increase in vaccination appointments in the first days after the 15th of August, compared to the immediately preceding period. Specifically, from Monday to Thursday of this week, 53,000 new appointments were scheduled, double the rate compared to the days before August 15th. By Friday, more than 5.89 million people had received at least the first dose, while the fully vaccinated reached 5.6 million.

In private old-age and disability structures in July the vaccination rate of workers was 62%, while today it is over 85%. The largest increase is in public structures, where 45% of employees were vaccinated in July, while today 90% of the total has been vaccinated.
