Greece:- Will schools open after the holidays?

Will schools open after the holidays.

There is a lot of discussion these days around schools and when they will finally open after the holidays.  As well as what will happen to the security protocols at a time when we have a rapid increase in cases due to the Omicron mutation.

The final decisions on the protocols are expected to be made within the next week, with the government for the time being saying that they will open normally.

The discussions are intense as well as parents and teachers are worried about the spread of the coronavirus after the holidays as we have already exceeded 35 thousand cases, with schools closed.

However, all school trips have already been suspended, both eternally within Greece and abroad by any means.

Makri: Possibility to open schools with rapid test

“The government’s planning and disposition is for the schools to open on January 10 with the protocols that will be suggested by the experts,” Deputy Minister of Education Zetta Makri assured via SKAI, adding that we have ten days ahead to evaluate the data.

Ms. Makri stated that the protocols we have had so far, have worked.

The Undersecretary stated that from September to December 2021, 200 departments were closed at approximately 81,000. He pointed out that possibly the start of schools could be done with a rapid test.

At the same time, the professor of Paediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Committee of Experts, Vana Papaevangelou, while informing on Thursday about the course of the coronavirus, noted that “as far as schools are concerned, we have not discussed whether a KN95 mask should be part of the new measures. I have not seen this happen anywhere. Let’s say that in general, because we have started discussions about schools, we have not said about extending school holidays. It’s still a little early. We will discuss them again next week. ”

Vatopoulos: We will have more cases in schools because of Omicron.

At the same time, the professor of Microbiology, Alkiviadis Vatopoulos, draws attention to the fact that the rate of increase of cases can change.

“The message should not be passed on that (Omicron) is just a cold … It may be a simple cold in a large part of the population, but the large numbers will obviously cause a lot of serious incidents, and we will obviously have a problem,” he warned. .

He clarified for the schools that there will be a discussion these days in the committee and decisions will be made.

“Schools are a controlled place, people need to see if and how many outbreaks we had in schools, that is, cases within the school. If and when a school closes, will depend on the rate of increase of cases, which may change, because now with Omicron we will probably have many more cases much faster. “The issues will be discussed,” he commented.

Plan B

However, according to information, on the table will be the proposal to open the schools not on January 10 but on January 17, in order to have a clearer picture of the course of the pandemic after the holidays.

The measure is supported by experts but it seems that for the time being it has been rejected by the government.
