Several articles recently have written about aspects of tourism in Greece that are causing an impact on popular sights, areas, or beaches. Zakynthos hasn’t escaped, as its own beach, Navagio has been the focus of a few articles asking if its popularity is ruining the beach?
Zakynthos is an island that relies heavily on tourism, like many places in Greece. Between April and October islanders only have a short window of time to earn a living, as much of local’s income throughout the year comes directly from tourism, and as the last two years have shown, without it they struggle.
To some extent, Greece has become the victim of its own success. Wherever you go in the country there’s the perfect beach, view, or sunset. It’s an Instagrammer and TikToker’s dream, but the draw of the influencer’s tourism comes with a huge downside.
Santorini has been struggling for a few years now due to its huge popularity, Crete and Mykonos have faced problems too, and Zakynthos has recently joined the list with its own Navagio beach becoming so popular, that it’s being considered a destination in Greece that is now struggling with over-tourism.
Recently tourists have vented their frustrations with the beach on the internet claiming it’s dirty, overcrowded, and overrated. No tourist will ever be 100% happy, and Zakynthos like everywhere in the world must do what it can to try and strike a balance between drawing tourists in, raising revenue and allowing people to earn a living. All this must be done whilst also trying to protect the country, its environment and beauty, for future generations. It’s not an easy thing to do, and there are no easy answers, but maybe the tourism of today needs to adapt to become more sustainable, and factor in all aspects, so that tourism leaves no negative repercussions in the future.
