NATO accession protocol signed, FYROM to change name in a couple of days

The foreign ministers of NATO member states and FYROM signed the protocol on the “North Macedonia ‘s” accession to the North Atlantic alliance on Wednesday. The signature marks the final stage on FYROM’s path to becoming the 30th member of NATO.

“This journey made us more mature, we have proven that we can assume our responsibility, face a problem, and resolve those problems,” FYROM’s Foreign Minister Nicola Dimitrov said.

Following the signing of the accession protocol, the country would change its name into Republic of North Macedonia “in a matter of days” Dimitrov revealed.

“In a matter of days, we’ll resolve the last remaining dispute we have with any of our neighbors,” he said, according to BBC.

Signing the Prespes Agreement, change its name and abandon irredentism were Greece’s preconditions in order to lift its veto and allow FYROM to be a member of NATO and the European Union.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg hailed the signature as “a historic day.” He also stressed the difficulties before the accession protocol could be signed, saying “This has not been an easy road.”

Each NATO member will now need to ratify the accession protocol. The Greek Parliament will vote for it on Friday, Feb 8, 2019.
