Greek and UK Prime Minister’s discuss the Parthenon Marbles

Yesterday the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, hosted the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis for a meeting at Downing Street. As predicted, the Greek Prime Minister raised the issue of the Parthenon Marbles and the long-running row that has continued to take place over their request to be returned to Greece.

The UK Prime Minister noted that he understood the strength of feeling in Greece over the issue of the Parthenon Marbles but declined to make a decision over the future of the marbles, instead saying that it is a matter for the British Museum and not the UK Government. Both Prime Minister’s agreed that the Parthenon Marble issue won’t affect the continuing, strong relationship between the UK and Greece.

At the meeting both Prime Minister’s agreed that they had a strong UK-Greek relationship and noted the 200thanniversary of the Greek war of independence, before discussing other topics such as the Covid vaccine rollout and how travel has now resumed, and the success at the COP26 Summit and the agreements by attending nations to reach net carbon emissions.

It was good to see that the issue of the Parthenon Marbles was raised, and it will be interesting to see how the Trustees of the British Museum will respond to this meeting. As yet they haven’t commented.
