An extremely striking weather phenomenon was recorded during the pass of the latest storms. A fellow citizen Dimitra Zoupanou, from the area of Elatoi captured the rare moment.
It was the moment when, within the sea area of the northwest of Zakynthos, a “triple” water spout appeared, giving a rare sight to the locals.
The Water Spout phenomenon occurs in days with great heat and humidity and is the vortex between a “stormwater” and the surface of the sea. The main cause of this phenomenon is the large temperature difference between water surfaces and higher atmospheric layers.
Though weaker than whirlwinds, water spouts have wind speeds of over 100 km per hour, however when reaching land, they are extinguished.
Most water spouts are observed near the tropics and rarely within the mid-latitudes. The occurrence of water spouts is caused, according to experts, mainly to global warming.
As it is, it is an unusual and impressive phenomenon that in recent years has made its appearance regularly on our island as well as in the whole of Western Greece and the Ionian Sea. At the same time our island, as well as the whole area of the southern Ionian and western Peloponnesus, are at the center of our series of intense phenomena.
Although Zakynthos is accustomed to severe bad weather, its frequency and unprecedented intensity in recent years is unusual and it is obvious that we all need to learn how to live with them and take preventive measures.
