Zakynthian sounds in Thessaloniki

Zakynthian sounds in Thessaloniki

Zakynthos is well known for her music and song. There are many choirs as well within the island, all having added to the Zakynthian style that has been passed down from generation to generation. One such choir which stands out,  is that of a unique women’s choir that has only been in operation for the last two years, known as “ΡΟΔΑΜΠΕΛΟΣ” (Rodambelos). FB_IMG_1526389989460

The name was deprived from the region from where they originated, Ροϊδο (Roitho), as it is known to the locals and an addition of the more modern name Αμπελόκηποι (Αmbelokipi). This region being named after the pommegrantes and ample vineyards which still depict the area even today.

The choir first started among a few women who wanted to hear the gospels sang within their local church,  St. Nicholas. Lucky enough a very young and talented musician, soprano and vocal/ musical tutor, Andriana Lykouresi took these women under her wing after seeing the passion the women had for song.

Although they had no experience in singing, their love for music and a passion to share that love among the people grew. They performed at the local church adding Holy Friday to their musical forte of success when singing the Holy lament that no choir had sung in recent years,  bringing back a lost ancient tradition into their village.

So, how did the group of women from a local village become a success in Thessaloniki? Adriana says “it’s the love they promote. Whilst singing you can see they not only love what they do but they are somehow connected to each other, and the results are amazing.”

The choir took part in the 4th national festival of choirs on Saturday the 12th May, 2018. Choirs from all over Greece joined in the festivities and “ΡΟΔΑΜΠΕΛΟΣ”” was the only Zakynthian choir which participated, joined by pianist Dionysios Tourkakis and song writer/musician John Pantakis.

Their performance left an excellent impression on those who belong to the music world and of course the audience whose round of applause seemed to be never ending.

Informer would like to congratulate “ΡΟΔΑΜΠΕΛΟΣ” and wish them every success in the future, proving that a small village, on a small island can do many things. CONGRATULATIONS!!
