Every year on the 27th of September the world celebrates International World Tourism Day. As we know, tourism is important to the island of Zakynthos, and its importance has been heightened even more so these last two summer seasons.
Due to the effect that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the tourism sector and tourism locations, around the world, both from a social and economic point of view, the focus of this year’s International World Tourism Day is “Tourism for Inclusive Growth”.
A department of the United Nations has taken responsibility for “Responsible and Sustainable Tourism”. It aims to help the international tourism sector benefit from inclusive recovery and growth over the following months and years. They want to ensure that everyone within the tourism sector has a say in the future of tourism. This includes communities, minorities, youth, and anyone else who may have been left behind within those sectors. They are also looking to ensure that the global vaccination plan goes ahead as required as vaccination of populations is crucial for the recovery of the tourism industry internationally.
It is hoped that the outcomes from “Tourism for Inclusive Growth” will feed down to Zakynthos and help improve tourism across the island for everyone, including environmental concerns. It would be good to see environmental tourism being made a focus of the future of Zakynthos tourism in order to protect the heritage and wildlife of the island.
The Zakynthos Informer team would like to wish every tourist who has visited Zakynthos recently, or who is intending on visiting Zakynthos, a very happy International World Tourism Day! We look forward to seeing you all again very soon and thank you for supporting every single one of our islands businesses. Without you, our island would be unable to thrive and our business owners and residents would struggle throughout the winter months.
